November 10th, 2006 : New Arm Rests
I gave in this week and ordered armrests from Classic Parts (was Chevy Duty) ... they cost nearly $70.00 for the pair but after seeing them, I was glad I went ahead and did it:
They *look* very nice ... however ... those plastic forms on the bottom sides are of a much poorer quality than is revealed at first glance. The plastic is actually very thin and, as I later found out, one good slam of the doors on a cold Winter's day and the plastic will break at any of its stress points (like where the screws are). The vinyl tops make a nice look and feel for the truck ... and I thought it would save me the time of fabricating my own ... but in the end, I had to replace the plastic parts by fabricating duplicates out of red oak (see my UPDATE below).
P.S. If you purchase these from Classic Parts, they'll tell you that they come with no hardware ... I know because I called and asked and they told me I'd have to get my own bolts for mounting ... but when I got the armrests the hardware (bolts) were included ... and they were stainless steel, too!
UPDATE -- January 25th, 2007 : Arm Rests Covered With Elk Leather
I added elk leather to my interior scheme, so the armrests had to follow suit ... and, as noted above, the plastic parts had to be replaced with something more dependable.
