I wrote this song very early in the morning ... one of those cold, Winter, Jersey mornings. I was staying at my sister Patty's house and I remember watching her and her husband do their early morning dash-off-to-work routine, which was (and remains) something I've never really been familiar with -- I quit highschool when I was 16, went out to Los Angeles the following year and started performing on stage, obviously, at a very early age in life -- there were no schedules ... no daily routines of any kind ... just this ongoing quest to discover, through daily surprises and wonders, where God would lead me next. I've always been as free as an eagle, under no man's rule ... and while writing this song I was recognizing how people can become slaves to jobs that they have no personal connections with. It struck me with a revelation about how Satan's rule over the planet invades everyone's peace without them even realizing that it's happening ... and how blessed I am ... to be spared that kind of existance!
The first two verses of this song point right at the "bad taste that was left in my mouth" by the time everyone had gone off to work, leaving me to my thoughts. I picked up my guitar and those words came right out, placing themselves directly into my songbook. Then the song moves into my own revelry over the blessings I find through not being conformed to this world.
P.S. - I'm using my favorite open G tuning on my 1968 Gibson Hummingbird guitar for this one: G G D G B D ... but it's tuned down a whole-step, making it F F C F A C instead ... an Open F Tuning.
