Track 9 from the Lord of the Rings CD ... I originally wrote this song as Younger Boy's Requiem in 1977, but never felt fully comfortable with the lyrical structure ... and then, in 1980, I decided to write a new set of lyrics to the melody and tell this story.
Frodo sings this song. His tale has been told ... "the book is nearly sealed" ... he's ready to leave the Shire and go to the Grey Havens to find his final peace with this world. His sidekick, Sam, goes with him and watches Nine-Fingered Frodo sail away with a fisted hand ... tears cloud his eyes ... the story comes to a close.
Written and recorded with my 1968 Gibson Hummingbird guitar, with an open G tuning: G G D G B D ... tuned down a whole step to an open F tuning: F F C F A C ... also, I overdubbed my Custom F Diatonic Autoharp on the choruses.
