This song is about life ... religion ... money ... popularity ... all of the illusions that the world presents as "reality" ... and attempts to ask some questions about it all.
"Straight is the gate, and narrow is the way,
which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it."
I have a very strong spiritual focus in my life and "Straight & Narrow" points right at my personal philosophy about it. There is nothing "religious" about me ... but everything "spiritual." And I see us living in two worlds ... one we can only see with our physical eyes, and one we can only see with our "spiritual" eyes. The latter seems like the illusion, but isn't. "Straight & Narrow" is just a flag along the roadway ... that says, "Yo. The choices you are making can be lethal. You are paying attention, right?"
When I first started jamming with Perry, his percussion style and technique was a real inspiration. There's a connection between us that occurs through osmosis ... the music always flows easy ... lots of communication going on ... and, I suppose it's needless to say, but we really enjoy playing together. "Straight & Narrow" was inspired by a groove we got into one day, coupled with a conversation we had ... and when I played the song for him at our next rehearsal, he just grinned ... and played ... and a few weeks after that we went into the studio and layed down the tracks you hear ... live ... I think it was the second or third take.
And so ... the "Moral" to this song is don't allow your Self to be steered by the thoughts and opinions of others.

"A long time ago, I downloaded this song. I at first thought it was ... ok. Then for some reason I put it on the only music CD I have burned. Now I sing it every day, my 3 and 4 year olds ask for it everyday and know almost all the words, and I believe it is a song that is not ok, it is outstanding. My 4 yr old calls it "welcome to the dark'ess" (without the n) even though I have told her it is called "Straight and Narrow" many many times. I specially like the ending where it goes heavy with percussions; well, I like specially the whole thing, the riff, the melody, the lyrics, the sound, all of it. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for it. It is a gift I can assure you we value a lot."
"This is a lovely, professional recording. Alan reminds me of Jim Croce for some reason."
Mort Salmon - RMMGA
"Totally unique and hard to classify. Like it's its own genre, or something. The bongos / congas really make this tune. Nice groove, neat lyrics, nicely performed."
Jeff Sherman - RMMGA
