Track 4 from the Lord of the Rings CD ... I wrote this song over a 5-month period of time, out in L.A. ... and after reading the books a second or third time. It became the "B Side" song of the 45 rpm 'Rings Project we recorded in Nashville, back in 1980.
Based on the Chapters titled Three Is Company, A Shortcut to Mushrooms and Flight to the Ford, this song concerns itself with the threat of nine Nazguls mounted upon black steeds ... nine spirit-beings, whose mission is to get the Ring from Frodo. These guys are as evil, miserable, and as horrifying to look upon as one can imagine ... and - they are in hot pursuit of Frodo & Company through the first twelve chapters of Book I.
I'm playing a small Marine Band harmonica on this song ... the matching melody line is from my teardrop dulcimer.
